8) Bermuda Run
Bermuda Run is a fully-gated residential community with a population of 2,750 just minutes from Winston-Salem. The town started as a horse and cattle farm in the 1920s. It was purchased by Billy Satterfield, a plumber’s assistant who wished to build his own country club. He sold lots for $10,000 a piece, one of which was purchased by golfing legend Arnold Palmer. The club began to expand in the 1980s, adding 234 more acres, a retirement center, condominiums and additional space for golf courses. The average income is $47,765. It’s one of three gated communities in the entire state granted status as an official municipality.
