10 Worst Cities in the United States for Violent Crime

2) Oakland

Oakland is a city in California’s San Francisco Bay Area. Its violent crime rate is 1,442.5 crimes per 100,000 residents, and the city is in the bottom 1st percentile in terms of safety in cities in the United States. In fact, in the span of 1 year, Oakland was the site of 85 murders, over 3,200 robberies, and over 2,300 assaults. Just as with most cities, however, some neighborhoods are safer than others. Most of Oakland’s safest neighborhoods are more inland from the bay, although there are some near the water as well. The safest is by Middle Harbor Road and Adeline Street, which has a very high real estate demand and whose residents generally have high income. Many of the less safe areas are towards the northwestern part of the city, such as by Santa Clara Avenue and Jean Street. The majority of people in this neighborhood live alone, and a large proportion of residents have lived there fewer than five years, indicating a less stable place to settle.
