11 Worst Cities in the US to Retire

san bernardino

5) San Bernardino, California

San Bernardino is a valley city located near Riverside, California and is well known for its close proximity to Big Bear Mountain and Arrowhead Springs. While there are certain areas that receive yearly snowfall, San Bernardino is relatively dry with hot summers, which makes the area at a high risk for wildfires. The city’s total population sits at approximately 210,000 residents, however the crime rate is exceptionally high despite its modest population. San Bernardino is also notorious for having some of the highest tax rates in the country as well as living costs that sit well above average. Culturally speaking, San Bernardino’s diversity in regards to art, entertainment, food, and demographics is relatively slim with the exception of minor league sports teams, a NASCAR venue, and the early influence of the California Theatre. Retirees have little to find in San Bernardino other than a short commute to ski resorts and outdoor activities located at surrounding lakes.
