9 Commonly Believed Myths about Social Security
4) You are not eligible for Social Security benefits if you only worked from home
Alright, so admittedly, this makes sense, and it is true if you are talking about Social Security based off your own income. However, you can still claim benefits if your spouse, or an ex-spouse you were married to for at least 10 years is eligible for benefits. Now, don’t expect to receive the same benefits as your spouse, or ex. You will receive about half of what they receive which isn’t bad if you weren’t working the full 35 years of your eligible age.
The good thing is that your social security earnings, and those of your current or ex-spouse do not affect each other, as in your ex still receives their full share.
However, and this is important, if you remarry, your benefits will be based off your current spouse’s benefits, and not your ex’s. So, if your ex invented something like the lightbulb, you may want to make it clear to your fiancé that you aren’t quite ready to tie the knot.
